World Cleanup Day is an international initiative where organizations all over the world gather volunteers to educate about sustainable waste management and recycling, and to clean the streets of un-degradable waste in their local communities.
The local NGO PP40, led by Adejumoke Olowookere, initiated the event in Ibadan, Ogun State.
In daily practice PP40 creates artistic decorations, and playgrounds made from used car tires and other waste products, on public schools in Ibadan, including the students in the work, to teach them about alternative ways of recycling and stimulating their creative nerves. AnAwake were present throughout the event, which we supported with volunteer assistance and production and finance of a banner, and the jumbo bags used for sorting the waste collected, to teach the participators about the value of the waste around them.
